Building Youth-Led Research Capacity for Better Health Outcomes
Who we are
The Youth in research hub(YIRH) is a non-profit research organisation dedicated to strengthening youth-led research capacity and advancing high-quality, evidence-driven solutions to pressing health and social challenges.
We develop, field test, and rigorously evaluate research initiatives that respond to real-world needs. Our mission is twofold: to support policymakers and practitioners in identifying programmes and policies that improve population well-being, particularly among disadvantaged communities, and to raise the standards of evidence used in assessing what works.
By equipping young researchers with the skills, mentorship, and platforms needed to generate credible and policy-relevant research, we are building a stronger, more equitable research ecosystem across Africa and beyond.
Why We Stand Out
Youth in research hub equips early-career researchers with practical skills to produce credible, policy-relevant health and social research.
We collaborate with youth researchers and professionals to deliver rigorous, socially responsive research addressing real-world community needs.
YIRH provides consultation and mentorship to improve research quality, design, analysis, publication strategy, and knowledge translation.
We support research and evaluation projects, transforming service questions into ethical studies that inform institutional and policy decisions.
Our Research Areas
Youth in research hub advances youth led research that addresses critical health and social challenges across Africa and beyond. Our work integrates methodological rigour, ethical practice, and policy engagement to generate evidence that improves population health, reduces inequalities, and strengthens health systems.
Health Inequalities and Social Determinants
We examine structural and social determinants shaping health outcomes among disadvantaged populations. Our research explores poverty, gender, geography, education, and systemic barriers influencing access to care, with the goal of informing equitable policies and reducing disparities.
Maternal, Reproductive and Child Health
We support research focused on improving maternal and child health outcomes, strengthening reproductive health services, and addressing barriers to quality care. Our work evaluates service delivery models and promotes evidence informed interventions that enhance maternal wellbeing and early life health.
Infectious Disease and Epidemic Preparedness
We conduct research on malaria, Lassa fever, and emerging infectious threats. Our work assesses surveillance systems, outbreak response capacity, and economic impacts to inform strategic public health interventions and strengthen epidemic preparedness.
Health Systems and Surveillance Strengthening
We evaluate health systems performance, integrated disease surveillance frameworks, and governance structures. Our research identifies implementation gaps and workforce challenges while promoting accountability, resilience, and improved service delivery.
Implementation Science
We study how evidence based interventions can be effectively adopted, adapted, and sustained in real world settings. Our work examines barriers to implementation, system readiness, and context specific strategies that bridge the gap between research findings and practical application.
Digital Health and Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare
We examine the ethical and practical implications of artificial intelligence and digital technologies in healthcare. Our research explores algorithmic bias, data governance, digital access inequalities, and responsible innovation to ensure technology strengthens equity and service delivery.
Adolescent Digital Safety and Online Wellbeing
We research adolescent internet safeguards and digital wellbeing in increasingly digitised environments. Our focus is on protecting young people, promoting safe engagement, and informing regulatory and policy responses that balance innovation with ethical responsibility.
Gender Equity and Menstrual Health
We analyse menstrual health as a public health and policy issue, examining structural inequities and access barriers. Our research promotes gender responsive policies that support dignity, inclusion, and social participation.
Research Capacity and Evidence Systems
We strengthen research ecosystems by advancing mentorship models, methodological training, and publication pathways. Our work raises evidence standards and supports youth researchers to contribute rigorous, policy relevant scholarship.
